Seth started Kindergarten!!! Yay! Finally! This was the biggest news of the month. He is in Ms. King's class and was lucky to know one of the kids in the class already from the neighborhood and church. They were even sitting next to each other until they were moved because his teacher wanted to spread the well behaving kids around. I think there are 17 or 18 kids in his class. His teacher is really nice and I think they work well together.
Seth was very excited to go to kindergarten. We went and met his teacher first on Open House day. He just seemed ready to go from day one. I was worried he would have a hard time getting up early, but he is awake and ready to go every day. He usually wakes up first and is dressed and brushed teeth. And he only wanted us to walk to and from school the first day - unless it was our day to do walking school bus. Some of the other kindergarteners had their parents walk them in almost the whole first month or sit with them, but Seth wanted none of that. Of course, under the facade, you could tell he was a little nervous, but he tries so hard to be big and brave. He wants to do everything just like Andrew. They have to dress alike every single day. It isn't too hard with uniforms, of course, but it is still a bit of an ordeal. For awhile there the socks and the underwear had to match - I think they only match the socks now (and shirts and pants) and they want to match jackets, so we bought another Ridgewood jacket for Seth and are waiting for it to come.
Kindergarten seems like it is going well. Most of the time he is pretty positive about it, but sometimes he complains about having to go to school - I think it is par for the course. His schedule is 8-8:30 Calendar Math & Letterland, 8:30-9:00 Reading together & Snack 9-10:35 Reading Groups, 10:35-11:05 Recess, 11:10-11:40 Lunch, 11:50-12:35 Writing, 12:40-1:10 Resource, 1:15-1:40 Math, 1:40-2:00 Science / Social Studies, then pack up and home.
He just got his reading test back and is at a Level F, which is probably around where First grade is right now, I would guess. He got really nervous when they were testing him at the beginning of September and flew through it - missing all kinds of words and sentences. His teacher had me work with him to read carefully and he is going much better. He is writing well and doing lots of worksheets about all kind of things (positional words, shapes, letters, writing his name) and doing lots of coloring and cutting. I know his teacher told me she has been trying to ask him things that are harder than the rest of the class so it stretches him. He is very well behaved. They were starting with 4 good behavior cubes (and he kept them all every day), but now they are getting Dojos and he gets lots of Dojos every day. He is doing very well. He seems to be making lots of friends.
Other than school, Seth learned to ride a bike! We bought him a new little bike without training wheels and I guess all he needed was a bike that was more his size - he basically didn't even fall and could do it almost perfectly. So, within a week he did bike to school week. I have even let him and Andrew bike to friends houses, which is opening up the neighborhood and really fun for him.
A new season of soccer has started. Katsu had been playing with them each night, so Seth has really gotten some great moves and is by far the best player on the team. His team is the Sliders. They played their first game on Saturday. Seth did great and had tons of possession of the ball - he needs to work on shooting instead of dribbling to the goal, so no goals. He did an awesome job as goalie too and had some great saves. It was a great game.
He and Andrew have spent tons of time playing outside with their friends. Lots of neighbors have been out and about to play with in the afternoons / evenings and it has been great! They spend 2 or so hours every day running around, playing tag, jumping on the trampoline, playing on the playset, bikes, scooters, soccer, basketball, etc. It has been a lot of fun for them.
Seth is just his normal self. He is a ball of nervous energy. He will suddenly get upset and just burst into hysterics and run off. And you have no idea what happened. When he is upset, he doesn't want anyone to talk to him or bother him. He got stung by what we think was a yellow jacket yesterday, but it took us at least 5 minutes to figure out what had possibly happened. He still whines a ton. He is still a picky eater - he whines and won't eat most of dinner almost every night and then he tries to wander down after dinner and get something else. Not a chance, buster. He can't sit still and is constantly stepping on things or kicking things or chewing on things or some other nervous habit. Unless he is reading or doing work and then he is still and concentrates really well. He loves to sit and read. We finally bought a chair to sit by the book shelf and he will look through his comic books. I got him some graphic novels that were at his reading level this month and he LOVED them.
Well, it's been a fun month with Seth.
Fun Things August & September:
- Birthday parties galore! Seth went to a Lego birthday party for a neighbor, a Laser tag party for a neighbor, a birthday party at the house for me, a water outside party for another friend from church - plus we had a blessing party for Noah, a couple parties for Katsu's work and a party with all the new people from church at our house. Seth LOVED the laser tag party. He keeps talking about how he wants to have a party there ...
- Open House at Ridgewood. Seth got the grand tour and lots of time talking to his teacher.
- Parade for the Watermelon Festival. Seth did not want to stand by the other kids, so he went and stood on the other side of the street with Katsu. He really does not like hanging out with girls. He ended up with way more candy because there was a lot fewer kids over there.
- Starting school.
- Making some new friends and having lots of play dates with them.
- Going to soccer games. Playing lots of soccer. Loving soccer.
- Title 1 Curriculum Night at the school. We got to sit in both the classrooms and learn what they were up to for the year - but the real reason the boys wanted to go was to get books at the book fair!
- Pizza from pizza hut with friends for school spirit night.
- Too many donuts from Talk Like a Pirate Day.
- Pot Luck at church.
- Fishing with worms at River Park North. The boys have been dying to go fishing. And they realized that fishing ... is slow going. I think they thought we would bring home lots of fresh fish to eat. It was a little disappointing.
