CSA Week #4

Still a smaller week, but it's already been fun.

Rainbow Kale Bunched (green bor, red bor, red russian, and lacinato) ***
Garlic Bulb
Green Onions
Fresh Parsley
Fresh Dill
Fresh Herbal Tea Blend (Borage, Greek Mullein, Feverfew, and Peppermint)

*** We ate the kale for dinner tonight using a recipe from Epicurious - Creamy Polenta with Kale and Mushrooms - and it was DELICIOUS. Katsu gave it a 9.5 (out of 10). If you didn't know it, Katsu rates every dish that I cook. Yup. We used all the kale plus some of the dill and parsley. YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CSA - Week #3

We missed the second week (our friend was kind enough to share in the bounty) and then they skipped a week because it's been such a wet / cold year. But now we get another week full of yummy goodness.

French Breakfast Radishes (elongated red and white radishes)
Fresh Garlic Bulb (peel and eat/cook)
Baby Turnips Roots and Greens Bunched (from our 2nd planting)
Baby Romaine and Sugar Leaf Lettuce (last lettuce for a short while)
Fresh Genovese Sweet Basil (for making pesto or seasoning tomato sauce)
Bunched Peppermint (great for making fresh tea hot or cold)

My favorite part is eating things I normally wouldn't and figuring out how to use them - this week I will have to figure out turnips, radishes, and the herbs. I am thinking of finally making my eggplant soup properly with mint (it calls for mint, but I always use rosemary instead, because I never have mint). Any more great recipes, friends and family?

CSA: Week #1

We joined the Beautiful Earth Family Farm CSA (community supported agriculture) this year. Basically, you pay your fee at the beginning of the year which they use for seeds, etc. and then each week through the summer, you pick up a box of veggies! We are very excited. The farm is working towards being certified organic and uses all organic methods. Chandra, the woman in charge, is really nice and explained to us how to cook all the vegetables. This is going to be a great summer and fall. We can't wait for yummy fresh veggies, especially ones new to us, plus being able to introduce them to Andrew.

This is week #1 of 20. Because the season is just starting (it was a cold, long winter / spring), it's a "lite" share with mostly lettuces, but it's going to get a lot bigger. I thought I would keep track of every week.

This week:

Red Russian Kale Greens Bunched
Baby Collard Greens Bunched
Rapini and Mixed Stir Fry Greens
Red and Green Leaf and Baby Butter Lettuces
Green Garlic tops and bulbs
